THE SAD TRUTH The sad truth is Graham Platner did four tours of duty in the Mideast and came home with a head and heart full of demons. That’s what war does to people. The sad truth is like many before him he turned to alcohol to destroy those demons and it didn’t work. It never does. It made things worse and almost destroyed him. The sad truth is another woman has come forward and claimed Platner sexually assaulted her during his “dark” years. She actually claims he raped her. The sad truth is there is a good chance Platner may have been so wasted at the time he doesn’t remember what happened. His accuser says that is indeed what he told her the morning after. The sad truth is his accuser didn’t go to the police and report it, probably because of fear. Fear of not being believed, fear of retribution, fear of how others will react to you and treat you, fear of how police will respond, fear of being ostracized, and fear of being judged. Such is our current reality. The sad truth is sexual assault and rape are widely considered the most unreported violent crimes, with over 80% of incidents typically going uncounted. The sad truth is we’ll probably never know the truth about what really happened. We rarely do in these cases. It comes down to who is deemed credible. The sad truth is we have a political system that is so corrupt this could all be a setup to defeat a person ahead in the polls and on the verge of defeating an incumbent Senator who has done little for the people she represents but has seen her own personal wealth triple while in office. The sad truth is we have a media that will hype this story 24 x 7 and go into a frenzy over it because it sells copies and brings in viewers. It makes money. This same media will also ignore the hypocrisy of having a President who is an adjudicated rapist and sexual assaulter himself sitting in the Oval Office.
